"Sharing the Sound of Music with the World"

Maria Newman and her husband Scott Hosfeld perform at the Dolphin Awards luncheon.

Maria and Scott were honored for bringing classical and contemporary music home to the community of Malibu.

"Music is the universal
language of mankind."
Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

From the earliest of times man has sung, danced, prayed and made music in reverence, ceremony and celebration.

Not so long ago - there was a time our talents were our entertainment.

Each contributed to the enjoyment of life in their own way and expressed it through their music, art and dance.

"The discovery of song and the creation
of musical instruments both owed their origin
to a human impulse which lies much deeper
than conscious intention: the need
for rhythm in life… the need is a deep one,
transcending thought,
and disregarded at our peril."
Richard Baker

Some told stories of past heros and tribal history and some sang, chanted or played instruments.

Dancing is as old as music.

All tribes share a love of music, dance and rhythm.

Everyone participated daily in artistic expression of life.

Hunting, gathering, birthing, dying, cooking, mending, teaching...

everyone found their own "right place" in community.

These talents wove the fabric that held life together in difficult times of famine, migrations, draught or war.

Music has the power to unit and inspire, and no events were undertaken without music, prayers and deliberation.

"Music can noble hints impart,
Engender fury, kindle love,
With unsuspected eloquence can move,
And manage all the man with secret art."
Joseph Addison

Dancing is as old as man and as new as the latest releases.

Each tribe, age - and emotion - has it's own dances and rhythms.

Music was used in healing, warfare, ceremony, worship, festivities, and was an integral part of human expression.

Music today is not only entertainment, but is used in healing as a mood-elevator and for pain relief.

Patriotic songs identify tribes and nations, as do religious musical scores.

Many are classics that have been played for centuries.

“Music is a moral law.
It gives soul to the universe,
wings to the mind,
flight to the imagination,
and charm and gaiety
to life and to everything.”
Plato

All members of a family played or sang above a certain class-level.

Every member in the farm and artisan community also participated in celebrations and most danced and sang - several times a week.

Seldom is there a party or community gathering without music and song.

Music expresses the rhythms in our soul and unites us with a greater sense of purpose and meaning.

Families and family ties carry musical traditions that vary from culture to culture - a signature of the people they represent.

"There is in souls a sympathy with sounds:
And as the mind is pitch'd the ear is pleased
With melting airs, or martial, brisk or grave;
Some chord in unison with what we hear
Is touch'd within us, and the heart replies."
William Cowper

Families were strong and were (and are) the basic building block of society. Clans, artisans, tribes and dynasties emerged around talents, and ensured the skills and talents would be passed on to future generations and the tribe or city-state would prosper.

All human behavior is genetic - artisans passed on their skills through their genes and then families trained and reinforced the skills. This is not unlike training a race horse from champion Thoroughbred stock. Genetics is a clear insight into child prodigies in every field. Yet genes do not activate themselves. Without a supporting environment, nothing much can happen for a child. Even with support, it is the individual that chooses - or not.

The seeds of greatness resides in everyone, yet some flourish and most do not. They merely survive with their unique talent undiscovered. The big difference is the seed talent finding a nurturing environment. If a talented child is fortunate enough to be born into a family dynasty that nurtures and even challenges the child - another champion emerges.

"Talent" is the results of genetic patterning, the individual's creative focus and nurturing reinforcement.

“Music takes us out of the actual
and whispers to us dim secrets
that startle our wonder as to who we are,
and for what, whence, and whereto.”
Ralph Waldo Emerson

Maria Newman was such a child. Her father, Alfred Newman, was Hollywoods most famous composer, gifted violinist and conductor. "A BIGGER than LIFE" legend -- he invented the Hollywood string sound, and brought the musical grandeur of Broadway to the motion picture.

Alfred Newman's career is one of the most prolific in Hollywood history. As well as composing music for over two hundred films, he acted as musical director, arranger and conductor on many more. His work garnered him forty-five Academy Award nominations - (total surpassed only by Walt Disney) and he won nine Oscar statuettes. He was nominated for an Academy Award 20 years in succession, from 1938 to 1957.

"If the King loves music,
it is well with the land."
Mencius

Al Newman was the "king of music."

He lived his art and inspired a dynasty.

Al Newman is pictured on one of six 33¢ USA commemorative postage stamps in the "Legends of American Music" series.

Alfred's brothers Lionel and Emil were both film composers.

A musical dynasty family, Newman's two sons, (Maria's brothers) David and Thomas, also became successful film composers. Maria's cousin, is singer-songwriter and composer, Randy Newman, who wrote the songs for the film Toy Story.

In the 1960's Mad Magazine took Alfred E. Newman's name - different spelling - for their "What me worry?" classic comic character.

Can you picture being a child with a father Bigger than Life -- and growing up in the Newman home surrounded by great music and musicians? Imagine the uncles and famous Hollywood friends -- there was no shortage of inspiration. Would you be swept away - or into the current?

Maria's beautiful mother, Martha, was a greater inspiration. Martha earned her Bachelor of Science degree in psychology, and managed the families finances. Martha is the daughter of poet Laureate of Mississippi, Louise Moss Montgomery.

Martha modeled fashion in New York, then came to Los Angeles as a Goldwyn Girl. She left her career to marry Al Newman and devoted her life to her 5 children and to creating a nurturing environment of opportunity and inspiration.

An astute business woman she also oversaw the building of several Frank Lloyd Wright homes - and she and Alfred endowed the "Alfred E. Newman Recital Hall" at the University of Southern California.

Martha made her visions a "reality." Everything she did was done well and turned out beautifully.

Al Newman was committed to his music and lived and breathed it. Work and music engulfed his life.

Maria saw Hollywood from the inside and knew first hand the price of success. Al Newman died at 69 when Maria was 8 years old, in the third grade.

Is music a part of your life?

Everyone in Maria's family was talented!

Maria grew up surrounded by great music and musicians and every opportunity to develop her talents - non-stop!

Her two older brothers were following in their Dad's footsteps - and all around was talent and commitment.

Maria's life was full and rich. Her favorite activity? Riding her horse.

Maria's passion is the violin and composition.

Although proficient on piano and viola, it is her performances on the violin that arouse standing ovations!

Maria trained and made the most of all she was given - and then set her sites on achieving "more."

And she has accomplished an amazing body of work - and she's continuing to expand, compose and create a community centered around family, music, art and architecture.

Martha often said she was "looking for the music gene." She found it in Maria...and her brothers.

Al and Martha shared their Good Fortune and extended their love of music to the USC campus and students of music. The Alfred E. Newman Recital Hall houses many of his papers and scores. It is a tribute to Alfred's work and achievements. Martha over-saw the construction and co-ordinated with the University and architect.

Maria chose Yale over USC, and excelled away from home and on her own.

Maria's love of Mary Pickford's silent movies led to her composing several scores for Pickford's restored films.

Mary Pickford's role in shaping Hollywood is not well known today outside of silent movie fans. Besides a major film star and producer -- Pickford's credits include forming United Artists, hiring a woman screenwriter and director, and her strong ties with the "family of people" she worked with. Pickford built relationships and success together, very similar to Maria and her mother, Martha.

Maria chose composing music, "So I could do my own interpretations of music, and not have to do someone else's."

Maria composed the score for the acclaimed Walt Disney movie, "Ratatouill." Although Maria works in the studios as an artist - performing with both the violin and viola, she seeks a different career path from her brothers and father.

"To go against the dominant
thinking of your friends,
of most of the people you
see every day,
is perhaps the most difficult
act of heroism you can perform."
Theodore H. White

Sketch of Montgomery Arts House for Music and Architecture.

"MAHMA is a contemporary Artist's Salon and home of Malibu muisic soirees."

"Relation and connection are not
somewhere and sometimes,
but everywhere and always."
Ralph Waldo Emerson

Martha and Maria shared a vision of the artist's salons of the 1800's and together built an Eric Lloyd Wright designed home. MAHMA (Montgomery Art's House for Music and Architecture) is both home and art salon. It is a place for family and friends to nurture their talents and share resources with the community - in the tradition of old of families sharing their resources and talents.

Maria and her husband, Scott, share their love of music. They are also interested in developing talent and formed the String Academy. They currently host musical ensembles and community music events together with the Malibu Coast Chamber Orchestra. The MAHMA house formed into the West Coast's premier music and artist salon.

"Use the talents you possess,
for the woods would be very silent
if no birds sang except the best."
Henry Van Dyke

The String Academy is the difference between a talented child reaching professional stature - or not. The Academy extends the benefits of "performance quality" instruction beyond their children to now include talented youth in the community. Dance and art instruction is also available.

"Don't ask what
the world needs.

Ask what makes
you come alive,
and go do it.

Because what the
world needs
is people who
have come alive."

Howard Thurman

Intimate setting in the beautiful home overlooking the ocean.

The home as music salon is open every month to the community, featuring outstanding musicians from around the world. Wine and cheese proceeds the performance - in an intimate setting in the Great Room or the Music Room. The music is followed by dessert and coffee or tea. Summer Fest: One week of music, art, dance, song and poetry is held in August.

Maria and Scott "live music" and share it. They open their home, heart and talents to other artists, music lovers, students.

Their global vision is sharing the joy and benefits of music from many cultures, including new compositions. to bring back to life the power and importance of music to the quality of life.

"It (theory of relativity) occurred
to me by intuition,
and music was the driving force
behind that intuition.
My discovery was the result
of musical perception."
Albert Einstein

Maria, "I had so many opportunities to experience "greatness" and I want to share that experience with others. Through performing, composing, and the String Academy."

"We cannot become
what we need to be
by remaining
what we are."
Max DePree

Composition for me is bringing the feeling and full experience of art, poetry and dance...to life. Silent movies were never "silent." The orchestra is the feeling dialogue: as is true today.

"Music expresses feeling
and thought, without language;
it was below and before speech,
and it is above and beyond all words."
Robert G. Ingersoll

All of nature "sings" from the oceans steady drum roll, to claps of thunder, noisy crickets and frogs and the sounds of rain...Life is Music.

"You too have a natural tone and rhythm - and what you choose is a reflection of your inner sound."

Music makes a poem a 'song' and experiencing music brings the art to life.

Many art galleries feature music.

Dance and music become one expression: Imagine a ballet without music.

Nature sings through the wind, birds, coyote howling and the brook rushing into the river - down rapids with a roar.

In ancient Creation Stories "life" is "sung" into existence.

Each person has their own inner rhythm and they find music (and others) that resonate with them.

"When Mozart was composing
at the end of the eighteenth century,
the city of Vienna was so quiet that fire
alarms could be given verbally,
by a shouting watchman mounted
on top of St. Stefan's Cathedral.

In twentieth-century society,
the noise level is such that it keeps
knocking our bodies out of tune
and out of their natural rhythms.

This ever-increasing assault of sound
upon our ears, minds, and bodies adds
to the stress load of civilized beings trying
to live in a highly complex environment."

Steven Halpern

Ludwig van Beethoven
